Populonia: Situated on a hill top near to Piombino and surrounded by the sea, Populonia is one of the most enchanting and historically interesting locations on the Etruscan coast. An ancient Etruscan city-state overlooking the Golfo di Baratti. The gulf was an ancient Etruscan and Roman port used for the transport and processing of iron from the Isle of Elba. Today, Baratti has a small marina and a beautiful beach sheltered by a forest of pine trees. Populonia still retains its medieval walls (built as a defence against the Barbareschi pirates) and a fortress, built in the first half of the 15th Century and commissioned by Jacopo II Appiani. Inside the walls, there is a small village full of character with elegant shops and a well known restaurant (Il Lucumone). There is also an excellent private museum which has on display many Etruscan and Roman artifacts discovered locally both in excavations and in the sea.

From the top of the fortress, there are exceptional, panoramic views of the Tuscan archipelago and the Etruscan coast.
