Archaeological sites of the Etruscan Coast

The tuscan coast between Livorno and Piombino is rich in historical testimonies of the Etruscan people. Daily life, culture and customs of this people are still studied today, and archaeological finds in the area are of great help to the experts.
Along the coast and in the hilly areas, a few kilometers from the sea, there are several archaeological areas accessible to the public. The most important site is the one between Baratti and Populonia, a large archaeological park with necropolis and Roman monuments.
The tombs of the park date back to the 6th and 7th centuries BC, these are tombs dug directly into the rock but also tombs similar to small hills in the plain. Inside these necropolis have been found many objects of everyday use, weapons and jewels that are now exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Populonia.
Much of the historic heritage of the Etruscan Coast is represented by archaeological sites, but the origins of these are the many small localities in the hinterland. Many of these boast in fact remote Etruscan or Roman origins.
